Ask the “locals” where to go for really good barbeque, and odds are the name that pops up will be Danna’s Bar-B-Que & Burgers. There’s good reason for it, as popular owners Danna and Kyle Junck have more than earned the good reputation they enjoy since opening their first restaurant in Branson some 20 years ago. There are now Danna’s also in Branson West and Kirbyville, a small community located east of Branson.
The Juncks’ success has not been accidental. They both had extensive corporate restaurant experience before beginning their own enterprise, and were especially well matched to be in the food business. Danna fell in love with good barbeque while growing up around a close relative’s restaurant in Texas, and Kyle has a degree in restaurant management from the University of Houston. The personal, efficient management is obvious at their carefully maintained, well staffed restaurants.
My favorite site is the one at Branson West, about five miles north of Silver Dollar City. (Highway 76 West to Branson West traffic light. Go left on Highway 13. Danna’s, well marked, is about a half mile on the right.) First off, there’s plenty of parking around the spacious Texas/Ozarks blended motif facility. The building is also uniquely fitted with oversized fire station type doors that can be opened during fair weather. There’s outside seating as well, along with plenty of inside tables to accommodate rush times. Even still, lines can be long during high tourism periods.
The food? Looks good, tastes good…and there’s plenty on the plate to satisfy the hungriest appetite. In fact, few diners can find room after their main course for one of the appealing desserts. As for the menu, it’s a long one that will make you ponder awhile before choosing. Danna’s is famed for its smoked, slow-cooked meats. My favorites are the pulled pork plate (about $9) and the beef plate (about $10). All the full meals come with a Memphis roll and generous servings of French fries, coleslaw and baked beans.
There’s many other choices, including a smoked chicken plate (about $10), burgers, pork or beef sandwiches (about $6) ribs, catfish, sausages, stuffed baked potatoes, nachos and salads. A children’s menu is also provided. A featured specialty is a Smoked Pit Plate that includes pulled beef and pork, a ½ chicken, sausage and ribs with all the side dishes. It costs a little more than $20 but will easily feed at least two very hungry people. A glance around the restaurant will show that all the foods being served look tempting.
Pleasant, energetic waiters and waitresses hustle to deliver the food while it’s hot. You will, however, stand in line to order your meal upon entering, and fill your drinks from a self-serve fountain.
The Branson area is dotted with good large and small restaurants providing nearly every kind of food to the millions of tourists who visit here each year. When you crave a really good barbeque meal during your journey into Ozark Mountain Country and want to have a memorable dining experience, make a Danna’s Bar-B-Que & Burger one of your priority stops.
